Journey To Platinum - Medal of Honor: Warfighter [Part 1 ~ Single Player Trophies]

If someone had said to me I'd eventually go on to plat Medal of Honor: Warfighter when I initially started playing the game, I'd have laughed in their face. But here we are, nearly a year after first loading up the disk, I'm now writing my second Journey To Platinum article on it! :O I'm not really sure why I decided to go back to the game, lord knows I've got enough un-played (and many un-opened) titles in my game library to get stuck into, I guess it's just in my nature to see things through to the end. I did play the previous MoH title and it was fairly enjoyable, so I decided to give the sequel a whirl. I think I prefere the SP in MoH than MoH:W but that isn't to say it was bad, it just wasn't as refreshing as the first, the multiplayer however I think is improved in MoH:W but I'll speak a bit more about that in the multiplayer trophies article. Anyway as SP trophies go, the ones in MoH:W are pretty hard, so if you're going for the platinum, you should be prepared for some considerable effort and numerous re-tries.

Single Player Trophy Guide

Warfighter - Completed the campaign

You’ll get this as the credits start rolling, doesn’t matter what difficulty you played to beat the game. I recommend playing on Hard for your first play through, you’ll need to beat it to unlock Tier 1 and Hardcore mode anyway, so might as well save yourself a bit of time.

---------------------------

Tier 1 - Completed the campaign on Tier 1 difficulty

Similar to the Tier 1 mode of the previous Medal of Honor, except this time around you aren’t timed, so you can progress as slowly as you like. Having said this, there is a useful glitch(?) that allows you earn this trophy, having played only one mission. Basically, once you’ve beaten the game on Hardcore mode, just select the last mission and play it on Tier 1, once completed, the trophy should pop.

---------------------------

Rain of Terror - Completed Changing Tides

Monsoon Lagoon - Completed Rip Current

Unexpected Cargo - Completed Unintended Consequences

One Shot, Three Kills - Completed Hat Trick

Hit the Beach - Completed Shore Leave

Know the Enemy - Completed Through the Eyes of Evil

Non-Official Cover - Completed Finding Faraz

Class Dismissed - Completed Connect the Dots

Pedal to the Medal - Completed Hello and Dubai

Closing Ceremony - Completed Old Friends

One Man Mutiny - Completed Bump in the Night

Pit and Pin - Completed Hot Pursuit

Let Him Rot - Completed Shut It Down

Preacher's Path - Finished all the Preacher Missions

Stump's No Chump - Finished all the Stump Missions

You’ll unlock these as you progress through the campaign, playing difficulty does not matter.

---------------------------

Double Header - Killed two enemies with one bullet in the Changing Tides mission

At one point in the mission, you’ll come across two soldiers standing outside a building/hut thing, you’ll then be instructed by your ally to take them out. All you need to do is wait until they stand side by side, then make sure their heads are aligned and squeeze the trigger. I’m not sure if they follow the same patrol path every time but eventually they will be right next to each other, just be patient and wait for the right shot. I did this naturally during my first play through, so it really is pretty simple, if you mess up, you can restart the check point or just make a note to do it on your next play through.

---------------------------

Release the Kraken! - Killed 20 enemies during the boat exfil in Rip Current

This was a pretty annoying trophy to earn, the boat section is towards the end of the mission, so if you mess up you’ll need to re-do the whole thing to get another crack at it. I think it’s less of a hassle to come back after you’ve beat the campaign and just re-play the mission on the easiest difficulty. It’ll probably take a few tries even then because while there are more than 20 enemies during the boat section, to kill 20 is a challenge.

---------------------------

Hardcore - Completed the campaign on Hardcore difficulty

There’s no getting around the fact that this is a hard trophy to earn. If you played the previous Medal of Honor game and tried out Tier 1 mode, you might remember that once the level began, any death occurred would result in an instant mission failure i.e. no check point restarts. It’s a similar affair with Warfighters Hardcore mode, except this time round, they’ve decided to step it up a notch and apply that one life rule to the ENTIRE campaign, meaning you must beat the game with NO deaths at all. While the campaign isn’t exactly overly taxing to a veteran FPS player, to go through the whole thing without dying/failing a check point even once, is a tall order to say the least. (And no, you can’t just save and quit when you think you’re about to die, the devs thought of that XD )

Thankfully there is a workaround (not a glitch or hack) that makes this trophy a little bit easier to earn but still far from a walk in the park. The tip I picked up, I had read on several different sites and in order to make use of it, all you need is a flash drive i.e. a USB stick/pen/portable HDD. Start the game in Hardcore mode and play as far as you feel comfortable, then pause the game, quit and save. Now after you’re sure the game has fully saved, check the HDD light and the MoH emblem aren’t flashing, quit out to the PS3 XMB. Insert your USB device and then navigate to the folder of game saves on your PS3, in that folder look for your MoH Warfighter save file, highlight it and hit triangle, then choose to save a copy to your USB device. Voila, you now have a backup save and so if you die, you won’t have to restart right back at the beginning of the game.

If you do die, loading the save file is just the reverse process, navigate to the save folder and then find your USB device, then copy the save file from there back onto your PS3. When I was playing, I generally did this after every mission but it’s up to you how often you do it, a good idea might be to set a specific time interval, for example every 30 minutes or something because some missions are longer than others. I admit, the process of backing up your saves/re-loading a backup save is time consuming in itself but not as time consuming as playing for three plus hours and then getting killed by a random grenade [totally didn’t happen to me… *whistles*]. It might seem obvious to say but take your time when playing, you don’t need to rush in most parts, so make use of cover and the peeking mechanic and remember, just because you can’t see enemies, doesn’t mean the coast is clear – listen for chatter and call outs from friendlies.

WARNING
While I encountered no problems myself carrying out this method, I can’t and don’t guarantee your experience will be just as smooth. I will not be held responsible if you come across any issues/complications. In no way whatsoever am I saying that you need to use this tactic, I’m merely sharing my own experience. It is your own choice, whether you wish to do the same.
WARNING

---------------------------

Tag, You're It - Caught Faraz within 15 minutes in Finding Faraz

An easy trophy and one that I earned naturally during my first play through, so you might do the same. If the trophy doesn’t pop after you catch Faraz, just re-play the mission later on easy and try to sprint a bit more :P

---------------------------

Leftover Lead - Completed the sniping section in Shore Leave without missing a shot

Those who know me, will know that I do enjoy using snipers in my shooting games; those long range one shot kills, yes yes ^_^ So, despite the fact I usually enjoy getting these sorts of trophies, this one was a bit tricky to earn because for this particular section, the bullets fired are affected by gravity. This means that for targets that are far away you’ll need to adjust your aim accordingly to compensate for the bullet drop, factor in to this as well that the bullets do have travel time, so if the target is moving, you’ll need to lead your shots. I highly recommend that you wait until a target stops moving before lining up a shot, even if this means they’ll get a shot off at you. Targets that are close require almost no alteration in your aiming but the further away they are, the more bullet drop you’ll need to account for.

The sniping section is towards the end of the level, so if you missed the trophy on your original play through, you’ll need to work your way back there to have another go but fortunately you can just restart the check point if you miss a shot. During my research I discovered from watching a video guide that you don’t actually need to slot every enemy that appears, you only need to drop the ones that are marked, the rest you can actually leave alive and the level will still progress. Unfortunately this was a long time ago, so I can’t remember whose video I watched but a quick YouTube search will being up a load of results for you to choose from. Obviously you don’t need to follow a guide at all, trial and error will eventually get you there but it can be helpful to see someone else do it.

---------------------------

On the Clock - Completed the training in Through the Eyes of Evil in under 18 seconds

Not a hard trophy per se but one that you’ll probably be working on for a good chunk of time because of all the retries. It’s physically impossible to complete the course without rushing and racking up every headshot on the way. Headshots shave off a couple seconds off your time at the end of the run but it’ll have counted for nothing if you walked through the course. In fact I remember actually lining up shots while on the move to try and knock off a few milliseconds; I guess it worked because I got the trophy eventually. Just restart the checkpoint when you inevitably fail your first dozen attempts, to have another crack at it. You’ll soon have the enemy locations memorised and the optimum route plotted, after that it’s just a matter of repeating the course until you beat the required time.

---------------------------

Target Practice - Shot down the targets in the training camp caves in Connect the Dots

An easy trophy, you just got to remember to do it during the mission. I actually earned this trophy naturally on my first play through because I always do silly stuff like that just for the lolz. Most of the targets are clearly visible but there are a few partially hidden behind cover, just take your time while moving through the level and check thoroughly, which you should be doing for real enemies anyway. I don’t know if one bullet is enough for each target but you know the rule, if in doubt, empty the mag.

---------------------------

Storm Watch - Got through the sandstorm without hitting any vehicles in Hello and Dubai

Fun fact, prior to starting Warfighter, I was actually playing through Need For Speed: The Run, which is also published by EA and uses the same game engine, so a convenient bit of practice to help me tackle the driving sections :D Anyway, this is one of the more tricky SP trophies to earn, after several failed attempts, I caved and looked up a video guide. I remember using the one by PowerPyx, I’m not sure if the vehicles always appear in the same pattern but you should be prepared to alter lanes as the situation unfolds. There are three things that you should note: 1) if another car hits you, that will count as contact 2) the trophy only covers the part when you’re in the heart of the sand storm and 3) if you stop just after the turn off, you can restart the check point if the trophy doesn’t pop.

---------------------------

Vender Bender - Destroyed 90 market stalls in Hot Pursuit

Another fairly easy trophy to earn, you just got to make an effort to do it during the mission. Basically as you’re chasing the target vehicle, smash into every market stall that you come across, providing that it doesn’t take you too far off track. Remember that if you lose the target, you’ll need to restart the checkpoint and any stalls you previously wrecked, won’t carry over. I’d say you could earn this trophy on any difficulty but I’d advise not attempting it on Hardcore mode for obvious reasons. Btw, another fun fact for ya, Hot Pursuit is the title of another EA racing game.

---------------------------

Dirty Laundry - Found the grenades in the laundry room in Bump in the Night

There are two ways you can do this trophy, you can either manually check every single door and room when progressing through the mission or let someone else tell/show you where they are. I used another PowerPyx vid here but as it happens, they aren’t that hard to find, if you make a little effort to sweep the corridors. I imagine most people will miss this on their first run like I did because unless you’re standing at the right door, you don’t get prompted to open any of the others.

---------------------------

Room Service - Unlocked all door breach options

A fairly standard trophy that I unlocked naturally and which you’ll probably do to. The most efficient way to breach and room clear is to pop enemies in the face; this incidentally is also the way to unlock new breaching options. Again, it’s just a simple case of remembering to do it when playing.

---------------------------

Master Locksmith - Used each breaching option at least once

Once you’ve unlocked a new door breaching method, why would you not want to try it out? There’s a limited amount of doors to be breached during the campaign but there will be more than enough to use each option once, even if you happen to forget to change your selection a couple times.

---------------------------

Extreme Realism - Recovered from near-death 5 times without dying

I doubt I even need to discuss this trophy but just to be thorough. If/when you get hurt to point where your screen is extremely blurred, find cover and stay there until you regain full heath. I shouldn’t really have to tell you this to be honest XD

---------------------------

Tier 1 Imports - Got 50 kills while holding enemy weapons

You can carry two primary weapons at all times, so there’s really no reason why you can’t pick up a second gun after you’ve killed the first enemy of the mission. For some sections, I actually preferred using enemy weapons over the default ones I was given but even if you don’t, getting 50 kills will occur pretty fast, so you won’t have to put up with them for long. During one of the missions, you’ll exclusively be using picked up weapons, so you’ll manage to knock off quite a few of the required kills without even having to remember to swap guns.

---------------------------

Peek-a-Boo - Killed an enemy while using peek and lean in the Campaign

Lean With It - Killed 25 enemies while using peek and lean during the Campaign

This feature will initially take some getting used to and for the lower difficulties you’ll probably go through the campaign not really using it at all but on the higher difficulties, it will make your life easier than standing out in the open. The default button mapping is L2, just stand near the edge of cover, hold the button and lean out using the left stick, then target enemies as normal using the right stick (you’ll automatically be aiming down sights).

---------------------------

It's Dangerous to go Alone! - Requested ammo from an Ally in the Campaign

Lead Farmer - Requested ammo from an Ally 25 times in Campaign

A very easy trophy and one that you’ll no doubt unlock naturally, assuming that you actually use the default mission weapons. Whenever you’re running low on ammo, just stand next to an ally and hit the prompt to ask for more ammo, funnily enough they never run out XD Bear in mind you’ll only get a refill if you’re using a weapon that you started the mission with, for picked up weapons you’ll need to just collect it from dropped weapons but that has nothing to do with the trophy, so I’ll stop talking about it.

---------------------------

Tactical Toggler - Killed 25 enemies while using Combat Toggle

A lot of the weapons you’re issued with will have an alternate aiming sight, the default button map to change between the sights, is R3. Just click it once to change and it should remain until you switch back, 25 kills will fly by, so even if you don’t like using the alternative, you’ll most likely have the trophy nailed in a single mission.

---------------------------

Unstoppable - Completed Shore Leave on Hardcore difficulty

In order to earn the platinum trophy for Warfighter, you’ll need to beat all the missions on Hardcore anyway, so this will happen when you go for the dedicated Hardcore trophy anyway (see above for more details).

---------------------------

The Axeman - Killed 25 enemies with melee during the Campaign

Depending on your play style you may or may not earn this trophy by playing naturally. I don’t know if melee kills carry over between campaigns but a target of 25 isn’t that hard to meet, as long as you remember to rack them up when an opportunity presents itself. It might be a bit tricky and suicidal to go for melee kills on higher difficulties, so if it’s proving too much effort, just start a fresh campaign on easy and rush every enemy.

------------------

Using the work around for Hardcore mode and exploiting that odd Tier 1 glitch, definitely makes the associated trophies a heck of lot less taxing to earn but it still requirse a bit of effort. As I said at the start, quite a few of the trophies are a case of trial and error, if you practice/re-play the levels/sections enoughtimes, you should eventually get them nailed. Unfortunately this is only half the journey and if you thought it was annoying so far, wait until you starting working on the MP trophies, that's were the real challenges lie.

Besides the difficulty based trophies, did you find any of the others particularly hard and if so, why? Let me know below :)
