Journey To Platinum - Call of Duty: Black Ops [Part 2 ~ Multiplayer Trophies]

Here is the second part of my Journey To Platinum for Black Ops, in this article I'll be covering the multiplayer trophies. As mentioned in the single player trophy article, despite there being fewer MP trophies than SP ones, you could be spending much longer on them. There are two reasons why this is case, firstly how quickly you complete these MP trophies will depend on your personal skill level and secondly, for some of the later trophies there is an element of luck involved, which is completely out of your control. The MP trophies are split into two categories, online competitive multiplayer and the Zombies game mode, so if you're not confident playing either, then these trophies might cause you some problems. Fortunately for me, I enjoy both game modes, so I was prepared to stick it out, even when lady luck wasn't on my side.

Multiplayer Trophy Guide

Date Night - Watch a film or clip with a friend.

A very simple trophy but one that requires assistance from another person on your friend list. All you need to do is go to the theatre lobby and load up a gameplay or clip, I picked one from my own archive but I assume it’ll work with one of theirs as well. The trophy should pop not long after the match/clip begins to play out. If you don’t have anyone on your list that also owns Black Ops, you can try adding people you meet playing online. As a matter of fact, there are some Zombie trophies further down that will be much easier to complete by playing with people you know, so perhaps they’ll be interested in completing those as well.

-----------------

In The Money - Finish 5 Wager Matches "in the money."

Black Ops introduced party games, in addition to the usual competitive game modes, these consist of Gun Game, Sticks & Stones, One in the Chamber and Sharpshooter. I actually really enjoyed these games, so getting this trophy wasn’t much of a chore for me. There are two issues that can complicate this trophy for you, the first is that there aren’t many players online anymore and the second is that you need to be confident playing online. You can play any of the modes I listed above to work towards the trophy, so find one you like and just keep at it until the trophy pops. Finishing “in the money” just means placing in the top three, which isn’t too bad because there can only be a max of eight players in any given match.

------------------

Ready For Deployment - Reach rank 10 in Combat Training.

I’d be surprised if anyone who has jumped online, didn’t get this trophy completely naturally. Combat Training is meant to ease you into multiplayer but even if you’re already a proficient player, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t just use it to effortlessly climb the early ranks. It’s worth noting that if you decided to skip combat training before diving into the normal multiplayer, you’re now buggered where this trophy is concerned because the Combat Training playlist will not be accessible once you go over level 10.

------------------

The Collector - Buy every weapon off the walls in a single Zombies game.

If you’re a decent Zombies player, this trophy won’t give you too much trouble but if you’re not, then it will be a bit trickier. Basically all you need to do is buy each of the wall weapons located throughout the map, it doesn’t matter what order you do it in and once bought, you don’t even need to use it. There are two default Zombie maps you can play in Black Ops; Kino Der Toten and Five, as far as I’m aware it is your choice which map you use to attempt this trophy, though I would suggest Kino.

I completed this trophy in a solo match because I felt it would be easier if I only had to worry about myself but by all means, if you’d prefer to play with others, then go for it. Generally speaking there is one wall weapon per room, apart from the starting room, which always has two. Most rooms are closed until you pay to open them, so as well as racking up points to buy the weapons, you’ll need to think about saving some for accessing other parts of the map and of course, for the Juggernog perk.

You’ll probably need to hit the mid-teen waves before you have enough to open every door and purchase every wall weapon, so this trophy definitely isn’t a quick one to earn. Before you make your attempt, I would advise writing down the list of weapons that you’ll need to buy and their locations and then simply check them off as you go. Don’t prematurely buy wall weapons/open doors, first make sure you’re in a comfortable position in terms of points, perks and equipped weapons before spending on other things.

------------------

See Me, Stab Me, Heal Me - Fire a Pack-a-Punched Ballistic Knife at a downed ally to revive them from a distance.

This was one of the very last trophies that I needed for my platinum and unfortunately for me, it was also very time consuming. First off you need to physically get the Ballistic Knife from the weapon box, which of course is completely random, then you need to have enough points in order to pack-a-punch it and finally, you need to successfully use it on a downed player from a distance. In theory you could complete this trophy in a public match but I think it’ll be more straightforward if you get a friend to help you out in a private match, that way you can co-ordinate your efforts.

Having said this, I actually managed to complete the trophy in a private split screen match playing on my own (lol), basically I just let the second character get downed and then I carried on playing as if it was a solo match. I played normally for the initial waves, building up points and opening the required doors, once I felt I had enough spare points, I’d hit the box towards the end of each round and hope for the knife. It took a few hours but I eventually got lucky, I then popped off to the pack-a-punch machine and upgraded the knife (this will cost you 5,000 btw).

The next stage now is to use the knife to revive someone, if you’re playing with public players, the chances are one of them will get downed at some point, just make sure you are within shooting distance when they do. If you’re playing with a friend, they can either suicide via nade or run head first into the zombie horde :P I’m not sure what the required minimal distance is but I do know it isn’t anything outrageous like all the way across the map, so just pick something reasonable and give it a shot. Before starting the next round I recommend taking a bit of time just to practice firing the blades because there is a bit of drop that needs to be considered.

------------------

Hands Off the Merchandise - Kill the Pentagon thief before it can steal your load-out.

For this trophy you’ll need to be playing on the map ‘Five’. I wouldn’t say it was a hard trophy earn but definitely one that requires a small amount of preparation. While this trophy is doable in a solo match, it’s probably easier to recruit a friend or hope that you land in a public match with competent players. Anyone who’s played the map before will no doubt have encountered the thief, you don’t need to progress very far before he makes an appearance and you’ll know exactly when he’s on the loose because you’ll be alerted by an announcement.

If you didn’t know already know, the thief will chase each player in turn and if he catches you, will steal whichever weapon you currently have equipped. Once he’s stolen a weapon from each player in the game, you have a finite amount of time to chase and kill him but for the purposes of this trophy, you don’t want that to happen, obviously. The tricky part about this trophy is that, the thief is invisible to everyone but the player he is currently chasing and he’s pretty speedy, so if he’s on your tail, you can’t really afford to stop and shoot him yourself.

This means you need to rely on the other players in the match to do most of the shooting, which isn’t really ideal. The simplest way I’ve seen and tried, is to run laps on the upstairs walkway, then have your teammates positioned so that they can fire as you run past them. If they land hits on the thief, he’ll leave a trail of numbers in his wake, once this is spotted, they can zero in on his location and keep laying down fire. The thief has a fair bit of health so you’ll probably end up doing at least half a dozen laps but if everyone is fairly accurate, he shouldn’t take too long to put down.

------------------

Sacrificial Lamb - Shoot at or be shot by an ally with a Pack-a-Punch crossbow and kill six zombies with the explosion.

This trophy is just as annoying as the ‘See Me, Stab Me, Heal Me’ trophy and for exactly the same reasons, you once again need to rely on the mystery box playing ball and then you need the compliance of another player. I partnered up with someone in a private match for this trophy and even though it only requires one of us to get the crossbow, you wouldn’t believe how many times we had to hit the box before we landed it (at least 50+ visits). Once you get the crossbow and pack-a-punch it, the process is relatively straightforward, just train some zombies and then shoot your buddy or stand still to be shot by the crossbow. The arrow will automatically attract the zombies towards you but if you want to make sure you definitely get the six you can do a suicide run, though I would hold off on that until you’ve only got a couple arrows left. I don’t know if it’s the same for everyone but when we played, it took a good few seconds for the trophy to pop, so don’t immediately panic if you don’t see the trophy notification.

------------------

Insert Coin - Access the terminal and battle the forces of the Cosmic Silverback in Dead Ops Arcade.

Dead Ops Arcade is a hidden game mode within Black Ops, once you’ve unlocked the mode, it will permanently appear in the Zombies menu. In order to gain access to the game mode, you need to break free from the chair [see ‘Just ask me nicely’ trophy below] and then use the computer in the corner of the room. Simple type in “DOA” (without the quote marks) and the game mode should become available. You’ll earn the trophy the first time you play.

------------------

Easy Rhino - In Dead Ops Arcade, use a Speed Boost to blast through 20 or more enemies at one time.

I played quite a lot of Dead Ops Arcade prior to deciding to go for the platinum but I never managed to unlock this trophy naturally. Originally while I played in public matches, I figured that the further we progressed, the more zombies we’d face and the easier it would be to plough through 20 of them but that never really transpired. It then dawned on me why I was never smashing 20 enemies in a single dash and it was because I was playing with other people, more players killing zombies means less zombies on the map at any one given time. So I decided to play a solo match; I wasn’t sure how zombies would spawn in on round 1 but I thought I’d practice my training skills anyway, so I did a few laps of the map and got the zombies in a nice condensed grouping, then hit the speed boost. I destroyed all of them and the wave was complete, a few moments later, ding, the trophy pops, I chuckled and quit the game.

------------------

Just ask me nicely - Break free from the torture chair.

Like many others, I imagine this is one trophy that you’ll unlock completely unintentionally and probably just by messing around. If however, you have yet to discover this Easter egg, you’ll be glad to know that it is very simple to do and takes literally a few seconds. Basically, when you’re at the main menu, you’ll notice that your character is strapped to a chair, if you tap the trigger buttons on your controller, your character will struggle against his restraints. If you continue to struggle, eventually your character will break free from the straps and stand up. Tah daaah, trophy earned.

------------------

Eaten by a Grue - Play Zork on the terminal.

Another very easy trophy and almost identical to the “Insert Coin” trophy, you’ll first need to stand up from the chair [see ‘Just ask me nicely’ trophy above] and then once again make your way to the computer in the corner of the room. Having accessed the terminal, you simply need to type in the word “Zork” (without the quote marks) and voila, you’ll be taken to an old school text based adventure game, the trophy should then pop shortly after.

------------------

Even though these are labelled as the multiplayer trophies, you can see that the nearly all of them are Zombies based, so if you're not a fan of that side of things, these trophies are gonna be pretty sucky to achieve. If possible, I highly recommend getting a little help from one or more of your friends, this way you can discuss your strategies and plan out what each person will be doing. Communication is a big part of being successful in Zombies but not only that, having someone in the game who you know is actively trying to help you, will I think, just make things go that bit smoother.

Do you think it's fair that there are soo many Zombies based trophies? Let me know below :)
